Solid Mechanics Lab

Equipment/facility: lab

    Description

Our group studies "smart" solids whose response is dictated by their microstructure. Frequently these solids undergo LARGE deformations and involve interactions between mechanical and non-mechanical fields. Biological tissues are example of soft composite solids whose behavior depends on the arrangement of the collagen fibers network. Electroactive polymers, polymers that change their properties and shape due to interaction of their polymeric chains with an electric field, are yet another class of solids that we study.
