I am interested in psychogenic unique states of consciousness, and their relation to psychopathology and stress. In waking, these states include phenomena such as dissociative experiences, out-of-body experiences, hypnotic trance states, and immersive or maladaptive daydreaming. In sleep, they include special dream and sleep experiences such as nightmares, recurring dreams, lucid dreams, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations. I have focused on the specific relationships between dissociative experiences, maladaptive daydreaming, and various types of psychopathologies such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. I have also shown how various nocturnal phenomena and dream characteristics may reflect emotional distress carried over from waking to sleep.
