Preceding exposure to hyper-nutrition at different life phases underlies differential vulnerability to obesity and its complications

Our research focuses on mechanisms involved in the development of obesity and associated metabolic diseases. Modern (Western) environment with its constantly available, high-calorie food, promotes obesity – but not all people are equally susceptible to developing obesity. We have evidence from the literature and our own research that overeating/high-calorie diets during certain life phases in childhood and adulthood can critically program the body for later susceptibility to the development of obesity (obesogenic memory). In this study, we aim to investigate involved mechanisms that promote or influence such obesogenic memory. In particular, we focus on a possible crosstalk between white adipose tissue and the brain (i.e. hypothalamus). The findings from this project are intended to contribute to a better understanding of the development of obesity and associated diseases.
