WHAT CAN A THOUSAND NEURONS TELL THE BRAIN?

Executive Summary BSF Grant No. 2011058 The project was aimed at developing new tools to record and analyze information streaming from the retina, i.e. the eye, to the brain. One of the project’s outcome was that we have learned that a thesaurus of populations of neurons in the vertebrate retina may contribute to information encoding between the eye and the brain. This thesaurus reveals that the code the retina is using maybe organized in clusters of synonymous activity patterns that are similar in meaning but may differ considerably in their structure.
