Abstract

The current study examines the impact of location characteristics versus public management on the quantity and the value of tourist attractions provided in urban destinations. Place characteristics include variables, such as ethnic and socio-economic standing of the local population, local political stability, place history and proximity to accomodations. Public management consists of variables, such as level of tourism planning, budget and number of jobs assigned for tourism marketing and development. Based on an extensive survey of tourism experts (n=781) covering all of listed and ranked tourist attractions (N=1,097) in all cities of Israel (N=76), the study indicates that while place characteristics have more impact on the number of urban tourist attractions, public management is more effective in respect of the value of attractions. The findings shed light on specific aspects of public management that seem to enhance the scale and value of urban tourist attractions. Another contribution of the study concerns the development of indicators for assessing the availability of urban tourist attractions.
