Abstract

Presentative particles and structures are used to call the attention of a recipient to a specific detail – a substance, a person, a phenomenon, an occurrence, etc. – in the outside world or to a specific component in the discourse. Because they are being used to express the opinion of an agent and the emphases he wishes to make, and because they function as interjections, in order to draw attention, the presentative particles are both deictic and emphatic. The paper describes and classifies the different functions of הרי and והלא, two Mishnaic presentative particles, in Ms. Ebr. 32.2 of Sifré on Numbers and in Rabbinic Hebrew in general.
