Abstract
After a presentation of the developing moderation in Maimonides' attitude towards Karaites in his later writings as opposed to the severe approach in his earlier writings and the distinction between his tolerance of Karaites, particularly after encountering them personally in Egypt, and hostility towards Karaism as an heretical interpretation of the Torah, the article discusses points of influence of Karaism on Maimonides — particularly as expressed in the Guide of the Perplexed. Maimonides' theory of prophecy reveals a degree of awareness of Karaite theories on this subject, particularly on the question of the status of Moses as a prophet. In his exposition of the nature of Written Law and Oral Law, subtle affinities with Karaite thought may be discerned. Ultimately Maimonides' theory of prophecy influenced Karaite thought.
