Jeremiah did not have long to live when he emigrated to Egypt. When he came there he was already an old man, and his prophecies on alien soil were few indeed. Only three "Egyptian" prophecies have come down to us (Jer. 43:8–13; 44; 46:13–26), and even these were altered by later editors. The knowledge of Egypt reflected in Jeremiah's prophecies is very meager. Even his "Egyptian" prophecies make no mention of the Egyptian landscape and do not demonstrate any acquaintance with life in Egypt. Egypt receives greater mention even in Ezekiel's prophecies, although the latter lived in Mesopotamia. However, in the additions to Jeremiah's prophecies Egypt is present, indicating that the editor was obviously well acquainted with the land; if not with all of Egypt, he was at least at home in the north-eastern Delta. Probably he was one of the Judaean exiles in Egypt. The paper also deals with Jer. 2:14–18; 24; 46:27–28, with Ezekiel's prophecies on Egypt, and with Isa. 11:11; 19:16–25; 27:13.
