Abstract
The Ugaritic texts provide examples of some unusual formations and orthographies which deviate from the norm. Various explanations have been given by scholars for the individual cases, such as dialectical differences, archaic forms, scribal errors, etc. The term "doublet" refers here not only to word pairs but also to grammatical usages, e.g. deviant plural forms or variant patterns of the same vocable (napakk ma beside napkk ma), word pairs (bhtm in contrast to btm). The various possibilities for explaining these examples and several others are reviewed in this study.
