Abstract

Background: Mentoring is one of the unique forms of rehabilitation for women in prostitution. The mentor role creates personal and professional challenges one of which is dealing with their past story of being engaged in prostitution.Aim: To examine prostitution narratives offered by mentors who are prostitution survivors .Method: The research was based on a qualitative approach from a critical-feminist point of view.Study participants were eight female prostitution survivor mentors working in different rehabilitationand treatment settings for women and girls engaged in prostitution. The data were collected throughsemi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using categorical content analysis.Findings: Mentors who survive prostitution deal with their story on three different levels, to which different meanings are assigned: 1) the personal-psychological level, characterized by avoidance and concealment; 2) the professional level, characterized by a balanced disclosure of their story of prostitution; 3) the social level, characterized by exposure out of a sense of mission and as an agency of social change. Conclusions and implications for practice: The findings were discussed in the light of narrative theory, referring to how the role of mentor allows women survivors of prostitution to take ownership of the meanings given to their story. They suggest that integrating into the training of these mentors and the rehabilitation of women in prostitution, intervention models should encourage sharing and processing of their prostitution narrative and examining the negotiations regarding its disclosure and use.
