Abstract

We examine the optimal admission selection rule of candidates to economics degree programs. This rule maximizes the probability to pass the first year of the program based on previous achievements. For this purpose, we use a unique dataset that includes data on students that studied in Ben-Gurion University (BGU) as well as students who were rejected from BGU and therefore took the same program with exactly the same exams in two local colleges. The information we have on college students allows us to overcome the sample selection problem which is common in previous studies in this field that lack information on the success of candidates who weren't accepted for the economics degree program. We compare our admission selection rule with the actual rules of several universities in Israel and show that it is better.
