Abstract

The American Princess, portraying the wretched life and death of a king in exile, is one of Nissim Aloni's seminal plays. The play is multilayered, with three distinct strata consisting of three different layers, and the argument of the present article is that close examination of the structure of The American Princess and the relationships between its layers leads not only to a better understanding of the play, but to a greater comprehension of modern Israeli drama.
