Abstract

The Earth's surface has been on an accelerated warming trend since the beginning of the 20thcentury, and the last seven years (2014-2021)have been the warmest sequence of years since measurements began. Global warming is caused by a sharp rise in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide,methane and nitrogen dioxide, which are emitted at an increasing rate from human activities such as burning fossil fuels, agricultural activities and deforestation. Climate change, which affect severy region of the earth, shifts the earth fromthe relatively stable climate state of the past tenthousand years and increases the frequency,intensity and duration of extreme climatic even tssuch as heat waves, heavy rainfall and droughts. In addition, the increased warming drives a decline inthe growth of agricultural outputs and accelerates the rate of glacier melting, which leads to a rapidrise in sea level. Apart from its role as a greenhouse gas that drives global warming, the increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere directly affects the function and structure of terrestrial and marine systems. Its increased absorption by terrestrial vegetation, which has led to a process of "global greening", has reached a state of saturation, and disrupted the stoichiometric balance in vegetated terrestrial ecosystems. At the same time, its increased absorption in ocean water has resulted in continuous processes of ocean acidification that harm the entire marine food chain. According to the scientific consensus,we can prevent the most catastrophic outcomes of climate change if we limit global temperature rise to 2°C compared to the average temperatures of 1850-1900. To achieve this goal we must reachnet zero greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of the current century and increase the removal of excess carbon from the atmosphere using natural solutions such as planting forests.
