Abstract
This research note argues that the first Hebrew book printed in Kraków was Sha’arei Dura by Rabbi Isaac ben Meir Dueren, which appeared in 1534, and not other commonly-cited candidates, including a 1530 edition of the Pentateuch that is no longer extant, a volume of a legal code often misattributed to the same year, and a Passover hagadah mistakenly believed to have appeared in 1531. In the Ossolineum Library in Wrocław there is a book of Hebrew penitential prayers for the High Holidays bearing a 1532 imprint and a scene from
Kraków on the title page. However, because the words ‘Jesus Christ, King of the Jews,’ appear in Hebrew on a page of the book, it is unlikely that this volume was published before 1537, when the presumed publishers, the brothers Helicz, converted to Christianity.
