Abstract

The thirteenth-century Jewish philosopher Shem Tov Falaquera has generally been considered unoriginal and mediocre and, as such, has been ignored by much of modern scholarship. Steven Harvey's edition of Falaquera's Epistle of the Debate is intended to show that a medieval text by a second-rate thinker can be used as a good introduction to medieval Jewish philosophy by the modern student. Harvey presents a critical edition of the Hebrew text, a translation with explanatory notes, a discussion of the nature of the text, and three short studies on selected topics relating to Falaquera. The work, done with care and exactitude, is a valuable contribution to scholarly literature and a pedagogical tool for teaching Jewish philosophy.
