Abstract

4Q522 fragment 8 column 2 published by E. Puech (RB, 99 [1992], pp. 676–696) does not concern the altar built on the Rock of Zion in the time of David as the editor believes. In fact it is an elaboration of some parts of the Book of Joshua. The best preserved passage in this fragment mentions David's conquest of Jerusalem and the establishment of the Temple. These events are given in the form of a prophecy by Joshua. Joshua then explains why he himself did not conquer Jerusalem and establish the Temple there, and why he transferred the Tabernacle to Shilo, far away from Jerusalem, the holy city.
