Abstract

Although Don Isaac Abravanel spent only one decade in Spain, scholarship has treated his thought and works as if he was of Spanish origin. The facts that he was born in Lisbon, grew-up there, and fled Portugal when he was about forty five years old, have not been given sufficient prominence. This article tries to give some examples of the influence of Rabbi Joseph Hayyun, probably the most dominant and influencial religious leader in fifteenth century Lisbon, on Abravanel, who was his disciple. The literary evidence belongs mainly to the realm of biblical exegesis, which was the genre mostly cultivated by Hayyun.
