Abstract
The differential nature of innovation adoption among adoption units causes disparities in adoption over the system as a whole. When disparities disappear, maximum entropy is reached. If an innovation is introduced, entropy declines rapidly from its maximum during the early stages of the adoption process, reaching a minimum (highest disparities) at intermediate stages. Thereafter, it again slowly rises as adoption becomes more general. An analysis of the diffusion of industry among kibbutzim in Israel yields results supportive of the descriptive model.
