This work has been carried out with the support of the Procurement Executive, Ministry of Defence. In particular, the collaboration of Dr C. S. Smith and Mr J. D. Clarke is gratefully acknowledged. The investigation was carried out in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University College, Cardiff and the author wishes to thank Professor K. C. Rockey for his guidance and help. (Professor Kenneth Charles Rockey died while the writing of this paper was in progress.)

N2 - An orthotropic-plate method for the analysis of double-bottom structures is presented. The method provides information on the deflection and deformation of the structure allowing for axial force, bending and shear. The influence of the cells distortion and shear lag is taken into account in the solution. Numerical examples show that the method provides solutions which are in agreement with more lengthy and expensive finite element studies.
