Abstract
A general solution of the double exchange problem is given for a mixed-valence system containing an arbitrary number of transition metal ions and involving one migrating electron or hole. The general approach is applied to the oxidized high-potential iron protein containing tetranuclear iron clusters of the type 3Fe(III)-1Fe(II).
