Abstract
Reviews the book, A Journey in Mathematics Education Research: Insights from the Work of Paul Cobb by Erna Yackel, Gravemeijer Koeno, and Anna Sfard (2011). This book represents the idea of community in mathematics education which has been a theme of persistent fascination and one at the foundation of much of his theoretical work. After the forward, the book is divided into six parts, each containing an introduction by Cobb and other contributors followed by a representative paper authored. The parts of the book are as follows: (I) Radical Constructivism; (II) Social Constructivism; (III) Symbolizing and Instructional Design—Developing Instructional Sequences to Support Students’ Mathematical Learning; (IV) Classroom Mathematical Practices; (V) Diversity and Equity; and (VI) The Institutional Setting of Mathematics Teaching and Learning. I can heartily recommend the book to all researchers in mathematics education. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
