Abstract

The present paper describes a numerical study of shock wave reflection from rough surface wedges. For validating the reliability of the applied numerical scheme it is first employed for simulating available experimental findings. Thereafter, the effect of the wedge surface roughness on the pattern of the reflected shock wave shape and on the post shock flow is investigated by comparing it to a similar smooth surface case. It is shown that the presence of roughness changes both the reflected shock wave's geometry and the prevailing pressure acting on the wedge surface. In addition, at high wedge angles there is a kinked shock wave between the incident shock wave and the reflected shock wave. This wave structure is unique for the rough surface wedge case and its length increases with increase in the wedge angle.
