A simple derivation and an example of Hamiltonian ray propagation

Abstract

The well-known Hamiltonian ray tracing equations are derived in a simple way, using elementary differential operations instead of the calculus of variations approach. A simple example, suitable for classroom demonstration, is given to highlight the use of ray tracing for space and time varying media.
