Abstract
Nineteen cases of paranoid schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and personality disorder in members of a small Hasidic sect presented to a Jerusalem community mental health center during one year. Most referrals were not born into the sect but had joined during their twenties, usually from nonreligious homes. The life and writings of the leader of the sect -Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav- are presented. Establishing a therapeutic relationship with members is discussed. Therapists need a basic understanding of the patients' terminology and beliefs to direct their intervention accordingly.
