Abstract

Summary form only given. A linear theory of electromagnetic radiation from a high-power backward wave oscillator (BWO) with a plasma filled, sinusoidally corrugated waveguide driven by a relativistic electron beam has been derived and analyzed numerically. It was shown that the experimental results of K. Minami et al. (1988) and T. Carmel et al. (1989) on enhanced radiation from plasma BWOs can be explained by the linear theory developed. It is concluded that the present analysis of the absolute instability makes possible the practical design of high-power, coherent, and enhanced plasma BWOs.
