Abstract
A novel approach to power loading for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed. It minimizes the aggregate bit error rate, but appears to be rather complicated. For the case of binary noncoherent reception a much simpler, quasi-optimal loading algorithm is developed. The performance of various known power loading strategies are compared with the one presented. An adaptive quasi-optimal OFDM system suitable for the fading channel is proposed. The performance of this system is investigated by computer simulation for the case when both the forward and backward channels are contaminated by Rayleigh fading and additive white Gaussian noise.
