Addendum: Scholem on Meeting Gordin in Paris in 1946

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Towards the end of my article on the Scholem-Gordin correspondence, published in Naharaim 14 no. 2 (2020), I discussed the personal relationship between Gershom Scholem and Jacob Gordin.[1] In the piece, I noted Scholem’s brief description of Gordin as one who devoted his time to the study of Kabbalah during the Second World War. I suggested that Scholem’s firsthand description indicated that he met Gordin after the war, during the time Scholem spent in Paris in spring 1946. Recently, Ziv Goren drew my attention to an exchange of letters between Scholem and Emmanuel Levinas concerning this very topic. As these letters directly pertain to my earlier proposition, I discuss them here as an addendum to my article.
