Abstract

The (Formula presented) adsorption on Grafoil was studied using the nuclear resonance photon scattering technique. By measuring the scattering cross section of the 6324-keV γ line from (Formula presented), it was possible to determine beyond any doubt that (Formula presented) is adsorbed as a dimer, (Formula presented)(Formula presented), on graphite. The scattered intensity ratio from the adsorbing Grafoil sample with the beam parallel and perpendicular to the graphite planes was also measured as a function of T. This yielded the tilt angle of the (Formula presented)(Formula presented) molecular plane which was found to be normal to the graphite planes with the N=N bond normal to the same planes. This tilt angle seems to be considerably stable between 12 and 300 K.
