Abstract
Approximately 750 million people face severe food shortages on Earth. For these people, agriculture is the best option for national food security; however, drought, anthropogenic activities, urbanization, land fragmentation and industry have decreased arable land. This chapter describes: (i) the status of agricultural biodiversity in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region; (ii) threats to agriculture and their impacts; (iii) local livelihoods and ecological restoration of agriculture; and (iv) shifts in management strategy, adaptations and pathways to improve agriculture in the HKH region.
