Abstract

Combined systems for intensive mass algae culture coupled to wastewater treatment in high rate oxidation ponds (HROP) are at present, at best, only at an experimental stage. Thus, HROP cannot be considered as an established technique with standard operational criteria. In addition, local conditions (water quality and composition as well as the climate) play a cardinal role in selecting a specific management regime. Therefore, it is possible to present only general guidelines for the design and construction of an HROP. As shall be described later in some detail, adaptations must be made for each specific case.
