Abstract

Alpine steppes provide important ecosystem functions worldwide. This chapter describes: (1) the status and distribution of alpine steppes; (2) protective measures for the sustainable development of alpine steppes; (3) causes of alpine steppe degradation, especially climate warming and anthropogenic activities; and (4) trends and future scenarios of alpine steppe degradation. Conservation and restoration measures, including proper grazing management and incorporating indigenous knowledge, are needed to mitigate the impact of alpine steppe degradation. In addition, international cooperation among countries in sharing experiences and technologies for sustainable management and protection of alpine steppes should be encouraged.
