Abstract

From analysis of the X-ray structural data and the results on the mechanical properties and temperature dependence of the mobility of spin, luminescent and Mössbauer labels the author proposes an amorphous-crystalline model of the intramolecular dynamics of globular proteins. According to the model the globule is represented in the form of a system of hinged rigid blocks (α- and β-structures and other dense portions) submerged in a relatively loose amorphous medium composed of side groups and the non-helical portions of the chain. This medium together with the glycerine-like sheath surrounding the macromolecule offers free volume for the dynamic processes within the globule.
