An algebraic eddy viscosity model, based on a new length scale has been developed. The model proposes the eddy viscosity as a solution of a quartic (Q4) equation. The turbulent length scale for attached and separated flows is defined by employing a vorticity function F = yΩ introduced in the Baldwin-Lomax model. The algebraic-Q4 eddy viscosity model was tested for complex airfoil flows with separation. The Navier-Stokes computations of transonic airfoil flows have been conducted and the results are compared with the experimental data.
