Abstract
A thermodynamics analysis makes it possible to discuss the mechanism of formation of the ring-shaped structure in TiC-Kh18N10 steel alloys, a structure which is usually linked to the formation of chromium carbides on titanium carbide grains. The results of a calculation show that at the sintering temperatures the formation of chromium carbides and their precipitation on titanium carbide grains are very unlikely. They are apparently precipitated in the form of pure carbides or solutions with titanium carbide during the crystallization of the metal matrix or during the cooling of the composites, when the affinity of chromium for carbon increases greatly.
