Abstract

The free piston compressor was analysed theoretically by using a dynamic thermodynamic model. Optimized parameters are suggested for high performance. It is concluded that the thermodynamic efficiency of a free piston may be significantly improved by selecting a heavy piston, high compression ratio of the compressor part, and a low diameter ratio of the compressor to the power cylinders. However, this may be achieved at the expense of delivering a small amount of compressed air, and a need for an external facility to start the engine. (A)
