N2 - Now a day, risk management applies to every technical infrastructure. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the technical infrastructures of huge importance for ensuring the human and environmental health. There is a wide variety of technical processes in WWTPs corresponding to diversity of failures. They may lead to undesirable consequences on society such as lack of water supply, disease outbreaks, floods etc. Environmental risk assessment (ERA) determines the nature and potential for harmful effects to organisms such as humans, animals, plants, microbes or the surrounding environment such as soil, air, and surface or groundwater, due to their exposure to stressors. Assessment of potential environmental hazards in WWTPs and designing of prevention and mitigation strategies is essential and imperative. The purpose of the present study is to identify potential risks using hazard identification and risk assessment methods and their management. The comprehensive evaluation process includes identifying the phenomena associated with risks, assessing the value of the risks, inquiring about the likelihood of their occurrence and frequency, and determining the extent of their acceptance. The evaluation was undertaken by classification according to their severity and impact on the environment and public health in general and their impact on the plant's operations and its internal environment. The results of the work were expressed as a risk matrix and risk map with a specific sequence of events and the impact of each. This allows for a faster response to hazardous situations and a better choice to prevent or mitigate. On the basis of ERA, new decisions and solutions are taken. Continuous monitoring of the operation of the treatment plant is carried out by assessing whether the measures taken are correct and whether they cause the deterioration of the general environment.
