Abstract
The understanding of hydrological processes in arid zones needs amplification in order to enhance water supplies and living conditions. Classical methods are often not suitable for dryland hydrology and though tracers have long been used in other areas they have not been fully exploited in their application to arid zone hydrology. The aim of this symposium was to provide a forum to present and discuss the methodological aspects of both natural and artificial tracers related to desert hydrology. This book contains the proceedings of this first international symposium. After a keynote paper on isotopic techniques the 37 papers are divided into the following broad sections: groundwater recharge; subsurface flow systems; modelling of hydrological systems; infiltration and percolation through the unsaturated zone; streams and overland flows.
