Abstract
This work studied changes in the characteristics of ultrasonic waves propagating in well characterized poly(dimethyl siloxane) networks. It was found that the longitudinal wave velocity increases considerably during the course of curing reactions. The magnitude of this increase is proportional to the crosslink density in the network being formed. Wave velocity results exhibit a step-like increase around the sol-gel transition point whereas density and wave velocity increase as a function of reaction conversion. The measured increase in wave velocity is due to the true change in the value of the longitudinal bulk modulus.
