N2 - Many children are making extensive use of technological devices such as cellphones, digital cameras and music players. Are these children attracted to learning the computer principles on which these devices are based? Are they qualified to learn computer science concepts in an in-depth fashion? This study aimed at examining the case of teaching an advanced computer science course in image processing to middle school students. During the stage of learning the theory, the students exhibited rather low motivation; later, when they were involved in preparing individual projects on image processing, they demonstrated greater interest and success in learning the subject matter.
