Abstract
Imaging through the atmosphere has been a subject of considerable interest for thousands of years both in the horizontal direction along lines of sight close to the Earth’s surface and in the vertical direction upward toward the sky. Image degradation by the atmosphere has resulted in extensive efforts to overcome such losses in image quality. This entry discusses such degradation including both the loss of contrast and blur.
