Abstract

The addition of a unit charge to an otherwise commensurate Peierls condensate with a semiconducitng gap 2 DELTA //0 requires an energy E//s - the formation energy of a charged soliton. If the charged solitons attract each other then a system with a low soliton density rho will phase separate into regions with a density rho * greater than rho and the other regions with no solitons. If the chemical potential is varied, a first order commensurate-incommensurate transition will result.
