Abstract

Geometrically nonlinear shallow spherical caps with plane flanges are a widely used structural shape. This shape appears also as a kind of edge geometrical imperfection, or as a result of incorrect supporting of a cap with plane supporting edges. No consideration has been given until now to the influence of the flanges on the buckling behavior of the cap. The axisymmetrical loss of stability of caps with flanges under uniform pressure is numerically investigated, concerning movable and immovable clamped edges. Results show that serious attention should be paid to the flange existance as it may shift the critical pressure for snap-through.
