BASIC MODELS FOR MASS TRANSFER.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Upon completion of this instructive module, the student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic models of mass transfer through an ability to: define the two-film model, penetration model, surface renewal model and film-penetration model, noting the differences; write the mass transfer equations and the boundary condition for a given process, once it has been decided which model to use; calculate the mass transfer coefficient for absorption of a gas in a system, given the mass transfer coefficient for another gas in the same system and the diffusivities of both gases in the liquid used; and explain and predict the effect of turbulence, temperature, liquid viscosity, etc. , on the mass transfer rates, in terms of the parameters of each model.
