Abstract

Memecylon belongs to the family Melastomataceae which occurs in the Old World tropics and contains >300 species. Various species of this plant are utilized to treat herpes, chicken pox, skin infections, stomach disorders, leucorrhea, bacterial infections, menorrhagia, inflammation and polyuria. They have many pharmacological properties like nephroprotective, cardioprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antifungal etc. which are due the presence of bioactive compounds. In this chapter bioactive compounds and biological properties of eight species of Memecylon, i.e., M. sisparense Gamble, M. talbotianum D. Brandis, M. lushingtonii Gamble, M. lawsonii Gamble, M. wightii Thw, M. sessile Benth., M. subramanii A.N. Henry and M. jadhavii K.N. Reddy et al. are discussed. It is evident from the literature survey that among the eight selected species, five species M. lushigtonii Gamble, M. lawsonii Gamble, M. sessile Benth., M. wightii Thw., M. subramanii A.N. Henry, and M. jadhavi K.N. Reddy et al. are not scientifically explored for the bioactive compounds and the biological activities. There is a scope to explore and isolate individual new bioactive compounds in the selected eight species.
