Abstract
Protected areas in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region cover 40% of the land; however, sustainable biodiversity remains threatened due to climate warming, anthropogenic activities and land-use changes. This chapter reviews the following aspects of the HKH region: (i) status of vascular plants, mammals, birds and reptiles; (ii) risks and threats to biodiversity; (iii) sustainable conservation strategies implemented by eight member states, and the impacts on biodiversity; and (iv) achievements and suggestions for biodiversity conservation.
