Abstract
In the last two decades a handful of studies have suggested new ways of thinking about social taxomony of pre-modern Islamic societies. The novelty of these studies lies in the importance that they attach to ideals of behavior in defining social units. An example of such an approach is R. Mottahaeden's study that set out "to identify fundamental social units" by focusing on the "manners that gave shape to the political life of a society that flourished a thousand years ago in the Near East.
