Abstract

A semiclassical formalism for the optical absorption in a coupled electron-phonon system is derived and applied to breather modes in trans-polyacetylene. We show that such breathers can account for both the photoinduced absorption peak observed at 1.35eV and the groundstate intragap absorption tail.
