Abstract

The fluctuation dynamics of DNA breathing modes was measured. It was found that bubbles of 2 to 10 base pairs with lifetimes in the 50 μs range spontaneously open in dsDNA at 37deg;C, under low salt condition (0.1 M). The existence of these long-lived fluctuating bubbles adds a new and interesting dimension to the dynamical picture of DNA behavior and of DNA-protein interactions.
