Abstract
The optical absorption coefficient is calculated for a crystal in a finite-range electric field. The origin of the 'red shift' in the presence of the field is explained by the decrease of the band gap. The importance of the potential difference across the sample is discussed. Deviations are obtained from the hitherto existing formulae for the high-field thin-crystal region and a possible experiment is proposed.
