Abstract
In recent years there have been numerous publications on the antimanic and prophylactic properties of carbamazepine (Teril; Tegretol) in the treatment of manic-depressive patients and several controlled studies of the efficacy of carbamazepine compared to neuroleptics in acute manic states. One study has shown carbamazepine to be superior to placebo in the prophylactic treatment of remitted manic-depressive patients. Carbamazepine has been shown to influenze various neurotransmitter systems, mainly catecholamines, which might be related to its mechanism of action according to current hypotheses concerning affective disorders. Carbamazepine is a possible alternative to lithium in the treatment of patients with bipolar affective disorders who do not respond to lithium or who cannot tolerate its side effects.
